Shared Visions
NGOs that work for people without papers often have a small budget and do not always have the expertise to set up campaigns, but often see this as a necessity for the work. In addition to the lack of budget, it has been used for a long time stigmatizing images of undocumented people in the media and used by NGOs. Think of photos of people on their beds in shelters, very dark photos, videos that mainly call for pity. A lot of research has been done into the framing of groups of people, and the impact this has on both the group in question and the viewer. A stigmatizing image that portrays people as 'victims' leads to what we call 'othering', it portrays people as 'the other' and reduces the empathy we think we evoke.
Because we believe that this visibility is of great importance, especially now that the threat of a right-wing extremist government is posed, we want to develop a method to get the most out of images and develop a way to ensure shared ownership and access consists of these resources.
Shared Visions consists of a team of experts with and without documents who work together to create new images. With these images we can start working on campaigns that can be widely supported. The images and campaigns are uploaded to an open source database/website, which everyone has access to.
By setting up a shared image bank, we can also develop a shared vision based on the science surrounding communication, with which we can combat stigmatization and unintentional framing.
Shared Vision is a part of het Actienetwerk and is a collaboration of Here to Support, STIL Utrecht, SNOV & Stichting Gast
