Youth to Support
Project category
Community & casemangement+
Location
Afrikanerplein 1, 1091PN Amsterdam
Youth to Support supports undocumented young people between 18 and 26 years old. Many came to the Netherlands as a minor without parents, and received shelter and support in an AZC. They have received a rejection to their asylum claim, or have a Dublin claim.
In the Netherlands refugees under 18 are entitled to support, shelter and everyone is allowed to go to school. Only the moment a refugee turns 18, all this support stops. Young people cannot enter the regular education system and are not allowed to work. They are excluded from all social services that support Dutch young people.
Some of the people that come to Youth to Support have received a Dublin claim, which means that they have to go back to their first country of arrival in Europe to apply for asylum. This group has no right to shelter or support in the Netherlands, yet often has traumatic experiences in their arrival country and cannot return. They have to wait for their Dublin claim to expire after 18 months before they can apply in the Netherlands.
Youth to Support makes sure that all young people turning 18 get the support they need, and can better find their way to help. The young group is traumatized by wars, the long journey to Europe and the first rejection to their asylum request. It’s often difficult to be hopeful.
Youth to Support makes sure all young people have access to GP medical care and have access to regular healthcare.
Every Thursday afternoon between 15-18 there is a youth hangout at our office (Afrikanerplein 1), where people not only meet us and volunteers, but also find each other and form a family. From the hangout, we go with people to appointments with casemanagers, lawyers, doctors and we advocate for the group. Youth to support would like to encourage other organizations to organize activities so that this group will continue to be active and discover their talents.
